Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons)

Introduction

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) programme would serve as a platform for its graduates to pursue their career pathway in the biomedical, medical or any of the health sciences area. The programme introduces modern laboratory techniques and encourages students to relate what they have learnt in class with the latest development in this field. This programme has strong emphasis on research which will be a great advantage for graduates who are inclined towards health science research. Through its curriculum which integrates the knowledge, attitude, and skill components, the graduates are prepared to meet the challenging endeavour as professional biomedical scientist. The competence in both diagnostic and clinical aspects of the curriculum will certainly be great advantage in their future undertakings. Biomedical graduates from this programme may also further their studies towards masters, doctorate level or pursue a professional degree in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy through MSU’s International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

Objective

The main objective of this programme is to produce graduates with an in depth knowledge and understanding of all major areas of the biomedical and clinical sciences, with opportunity for a degree of specialisation.

Graduates from this programme can look forward to a successful career as: Biomedical scientist, Medical Laboratory Manager, Research Officers, Healthcare Officers, Academicians, Underwriters for medical insurance companies and etc.

Course Content

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) is made up of 120 credits. 24 units are allocated for the compulsory (university) subjects, 26 units for the core (school) subjects and the remaining 70 units are for the core (programme) subjects. In the first year, students will learn subjects like Organic Chemistry, Bio-statistics, Biochemistry and Physiology. In the second year, the students will have the opportunity to study subjects like Immunology and Serology, Medical Parasitology, Haematology and Phlebotomy as well as Histopathology. In the third year and final year, the emphasis will be on in-depth subjects such as Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory I & II, Neuropharmacology and students will be send for internship training to gain practical experience in an actual workplace.

Core Subject Description

Organic Chemistry
This course provided explanation on electrons and nuclei, molecular structure and chemical bonding. Then it will discuss on dynamics (the changes in a molecular system with time), chemical reactions and characteristics of association between atom and molecules. Besides that, phenomena and properties of gases, liquid and solids will also be included. Basic chemical thermodynamics such as energy will be emphasized. Chemical kinetics, ionic equilibrium in solution as well as electrochemistry will also be discussed. Biostatistic
This course will discuss on statistical methods required by the researcher. The topics covered include data presentation, probabilities, sampling, test of hypothesis, analysis of variance, regression, correlation and chi square test. Discussion also covers the techniques of research and utilizing statistical methods in analyzing the research result.

Anatomy & Physiology
This course will emphasize on the various types of tissues, the structure and function of human organs and tissues, nervous system, muscle system and endocrine system. It will also explain on the abnormalities and diseases related to these bodily systems. Through practical exercises, students will practically study on human body anatomy and their functions.

Systemic Pathology
This course is continues from basic pathology study which this course stress more on specific disease in every system of human body. This course also tries to relate between the etiology, pathogenesis, pathological changes of certain disease, how to diagnose, predict the prognosis and also determine the suitable treatment for those disease. Immunology and Serology
This course provides an introduction to the significance of microbes to human health. The nature of infectious agents, mechanisms of pathogenecity and modes of microbial control are investigated. The interaction between infectious agents and the host immune system is investigated in terms of susceptibility to developing infectious disease. The course also provides the fundamentals of infection control practice in the health care setting. Medical parasitology

This course will emphasizes on parasitic diseases which caused by protozoa and helminth. These will include pathogenic amoeba and non pathogenic amoeba, flagellate, ciliate and sporozoa. Besides, helminthology part will cover medically important intestinal, blood and tissues, lung and liver helminth. The student will be exposed on the gross and microscopy examination of clinical samples such concentration methods, blood film, animal inoculation and immunological diagnosis.

Pharmacology and Toxicology
This course is divided into 2 sections. The first section covers the general pharmacology such as introduction to pharmacology, basic principles in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic aspects of drugs. The second section encompasses the toxicological aspects such as types of toxicity, heavy metal poisoning, pesticide and herbicide toxicity.

Neuropharmacology
This course is divided into 2 sections. The first section covers the use of drugs in autonomic nervous system i.e. the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The second section encompasses the use of drug in the central nervous system.

Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory II
This course exposes the student to a number of clinical, health and environmental related cases. Through discussion, this course gives the students opportunities to think of the best way to solve problems, to analyze data and to interpret the result of laboratory test and be able to associate them with health problems of each case. This course also allows students to read and interpret critically scientific articles in the field of biomedical sciences

A Levels = 3 passes (grade C and above) in 3 subjects
Diploma programme with Minimum : CGPA 2.75 or Foundation programme with Minimum, CGPA 2.
